This breastplate or battleship is modeled after pieces from churburg's collection in South Tyrol, whose pieces have been produced over the centuries by gunsmiths from Milan or Innsbruck, whose style is reflected here.

The front covers the chest, the space around the neck and arms allows a padded underwear like a Gambeson and other pieces of armor to be easily combined. The lower part involves the stomach and kidneys. With crossed straps behind the back and attached to the armor itself, everything is kept in position.

originally created around 3rd c. AC to act as a personal bodyguard force for the generals of the Roman Republic, the Praetorians were employed in the camp or in battle and would serve as a final reserve force against attacks made on commanders during the campaigns. During the Roman Empire, this hand-picked elite unit provided protection to the emperor. Being the only armed soldiers admitted within the walls of Rome, they also received a higher salary and shorter service time than standard legionnaires. The Praetorian Guard was finally dissolved in the 4th c. DC by Emperor Constantine the Great.
