The sleeves feature a loop for individual adjustment. At first quite tight on the upper arm, they fall into a particularly wide enlargement that gives them their characteristic trumpet shape. This change can be worn under an overcoat, a cotehardie or a blaut.Outer clothing and chemises or shirts with substantially wide sleeves appeared around the twelfth century. They were not only used for fashion purposes, but also as a symbol of higher social status, as the wide sleeves were not suitable for the working classes. In the 12th/13th century, men and women wore plain shirts with trumpet sleeves as underwear to better preserve their increasingly fitted, often richly adorned outer garments. The change usually did not appear under the outer clothing as it would be considered inappropriate.
