Gallowglass sword without sheath
Irish Two-Handed Gallowglass Sword with Ring Apple, 16th Century
This two-handed sword is modeled after the massive swords carried by the elite Irish mercenaries of Scottish descent known as gallowglass (also galloglass or galloglas - an anglicization of Gaelic gallóglaigh/gallóglach which literally translates as "young foreign soldier"). Between the mid-13th century and the late 16th century, these fearless and heavily armored infantrymen fought alongside the kerns , the light infantry that made up most of the Irish forces in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The gallows originally came from the Nordic-Gaelic clans of the Scottish Highlands, Argyll and the Hebrides (on the west coast of Scotland), whose Irish ancestors married the 10th c. Nordic settlers. Dispossessed during the Wars of Scottish Independence, they fled to Ireland, where Irish chiefs quickly recognized their value and granted them work, land to establish themselves and rights to supplies in exchange for their loyalty and military service. Many Irish gentlemen also used to wear gallows glasses to serve as bodyguards. Over the centuries, the gallows' ranks have filled with native Irish and "younger" Scottish mercenaries.
The weapons of choice of the highly skilled gallowglass troops were a two-handed spartaaxe (presumably a remnant of his Scandinavian heritage) and a large two-handed sword. The sword often featured a distinctive ring-shaped apple that showed the end of the blade's spike running through its center. This unique open ring apple was quite typical of the 15th and 16th centuries. Irish swords. Many Irish-Gaelic originals with ring handle were found in archaeological excavations throughout Ireland and today can be admired in various museums (i.e. the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin).
Our good value Gallowglass sword reconstruction has a wide, flat, double-edged EN45 spring steel blade with approx. Rich section of 15 cm long at its base and two sets of double fullers on both sides (two about a third long and two shorter). The edges are not sharp. The handle has approx. Cross of 30 cm long with approx. Finials shaped e 7 mm thick, a wooden handle firmly fastened in brown leather and features the iconic ring apple that adorns many Irish swords.
This beautiful piece of Scottish and Irish history comes without a hem.
Note that this medieval/Renaissance two-handed sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to his quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as prop, for example, to complete his costume, and will make his transformation into a proud Irish warrior simply perfect.
