Medieval dress, Bliaut Amal open, blue / natural
This long medieval dress with waist and contrasting details is made of cotton fabric. The side seams are opened from the hip to the upper arm and have a lace for individual adjustment.
The Church did not approve in all these side openings that revealed in part the underwear, which explains why they are also called the gates of hell. The ropes are equipped with metal tips to facilitate passage through the sewn eyelets. Called gums(wedge-shaped fabric pieces) inserted into the side seams and the front and rear panels of the skirt give the dress a generous flare. The enlarged trumpet sleeves and decorative stitches at the hem of the sleeves and the open side seams give the dress a touch of noble finish.
The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud) andfollows the fashion of the11th to 13th centuries. While the women's garments had a rather loose cut and disguised the figures until then, this era saw the emergence of increasingly tight clothes. The Bliaut was initially an external court dress, as the wide sleeves were not suitable for the working classes. Over time, this type of dress also gained popularity among the middle classes, but was more commonly equipped with straight-cut sleeves. It was not only worn by women, but also by men - in this case, as an external knee-length garment.
The Bliaut was characterized mainly by the side openings at waist height and the trumpet sleeves. While the gates of hellat first resembled wider cuts, slightly larger pits, which gradually became larger over time until they finally stretched to the hips. The trumpet sleeves could also take on extreme shapes, sometimes reaching the ground. The Bliaut was usually combined with a shirt or sweater, a veil and a narrow belt.
Historical illustrations of bliauts can be found, among others, in the fresco that shows Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan or in the Hortus Deliciarum at the end of the 12th century. encyclopedic compendium.

To take the measurements of the body correctly and determine the size of the clothes, always wrap the measuring tape horizontally around the body in the widest part. For dresses, the sizes are based on breast circumference.
If you happen to be between two sizes, we recommend that you increase a size.
