Viking Sword Rus , Petersen D, Gnezdovo, C-2 Barrow, 10th C
This beautiful one-hand Viking-era sword is based on a find discovered in 1950 at the gnёzdovo archaeological complex near Smolensk, Russia, during the excavation of tomb C-2. Dated between the 9th and 10th centuries and classified as Type D according to the typology of Petersen's Viking sword, the original piece was in a pit under the remains of a funeral pyre inside the tomb.
Although the finely crafted and richly decorated handle (believed to be the product of a Gotlandese craftsman) was still remarkably well preserved, the blade was broken and folded. Despite its rather precarious state of conservation, it was still possible to detect engravings on its surface: an "O" shaped symbol on one side and the remains of a cross on the other. It is not yet clear whether these marks were the blacksmith's identifiers or if they were added later.
Although its property cannot be clearly established, the materials and quality workmanship used in the drafting of this sword suggest that it was probably once the prestigious weapon of a noted Viking Rus chief or warrior.
The reconstruction we offer here has a 1060 carbon steel tempered straight double-edged with wide, long and non-sharp edges. The engravings are reproductions of the markings found on the original blade.
The handle consists of a short brass guard, a wooden handle well wrapped in brass wire and a generously sized brass pommel. Here too, the guard and the pommel closely recreate the intricate motifs and patterns of the original artifact. Like many historical examples of the time, the sword apple is a two-part construction. The total ear of the blade has been nailed to the base, passes through the top cover and is riveted over. The base and cover are fixed together by means of two rivets.
This one-hand sword from the early Middle Ages comes complete with a wooden hem and brown leather fitted with a brass plate, a leather top band with embossed knot/braid pattern and a gorgeous sword belt made of sturdy 3 mm thick leather. The removable belt has holes that make it adjustable to various sizes. It adorns the same embossed motifs that adorn the sheath's throat, and a brass buckle shaped like twin snakes or dragons (a recurring motif in Nordic/Viking art) adds the finishing touch to its already exquisite overall appearance.
An excellent piece of Viking history.
Note that this medieval sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as an accessory, for example, to complete your costume.

The steel used here is not rust proof and may have surface stains in some places. We recommend that you do regular blade maintenance, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideal for steel treatment.
