Viking Mammen Axe
Considered one of the most beautiful and impressive archaeological finds of the Viking Era, the so-called Mammen's axe was excavated from a 10th century tomb in Mammen (near Viborg) in Jutland, Denmark. This unique piece lent its name to the Viking art style of the same name (approx. 950-1030 - a continuation of Jelling-style animal ornamentation, with the gradual introduction of more vegetative and decidedly less geometric elements).
The male tomb from which the sumptuous Viking axe and many other precious artifacts were recovered is dated to ca. 970/971 AD and considered the last resting place of a wealthy man of high and even princely status. The small iron axe is richly adorned with engravings encrusted with silver, niello and gold leaf, which leads to the suppose that it was more likely a ceremonial or prestigious weapon, rather than a mere battle axe or pitch.
If the motives that adorn the axe's head on both sides are of Christian or pagan influence, it remains open. On the one hand, there is an intricate pattern of tendrils, which can be a representation of the tree of Christian life or the world ash tree Yggdrasilof Norse mythology. The other side features a creature resemreal to an interwoven bird that is supposed to represent a phoenix (as a symbol of Christ's resurrection) or Gullinkambi , the rooster perched on top of Yggdrasil that wakes the Einherjer in Valhalla every day and will shout to the gods and warriors to announce the beginning of ragnarök.
The original piece, as well as many other grave goods and textile remains of the so-called Mammen Find (Danish: Mammenfundet), can be admired at the Nationalmuseet in Copenhagen.
The beautiful Viking axe we offer here closely reproduces the highly detailed engraved motifs and patterns of the silver-encrusted original. The high carbon steel axe head has an unsharp edge of 10 cm long and is mounted on a 41 cm long wooden handle.
Note that this medieval axe is not a weapon ready for battle. It is designed primarily as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is in no way suitable for combat reconstitution. In addition to its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, for example, to complete your costume, and will make your transformation into a proud warrior perfect.

When ordering a single item, the postage has a fixed value of €30, prices only for Mainland Portugal and Islands and Peninsular Spain. You must always indicate a telephone contact number to avoid non-receipt of your order.
National orders are shipped using transport systems appropriate to the size and weight of the goods. Orders are generally shipped within 2 to 12 working days depending on the items chosen through CTT or Transport Agency after receipt of payment.

Due to the specificity of the items sold by Loja Rei das Espadas, returns are only accepted under the following circumstances:
- The product sent is damaged by proven manufacturing defect.
- The characteristics of the product sent do not correspond to those described in the Online-Store
All items are shipped in perfect condition. If you receive any damaged item and that is justified, you can return it. We will send an identical article in good condition. You can request a return by email. The customer has 14 days to return the item.
Returns of products subject to special, personalized or made-to-measure orders are not accepted.

- We recommend sending the product by an insured carrier. We are not responsible for loss or damage caused to the product during transport.
