Dagger with Roman Dura-Europos sheath, 3º c.
Roman Dura-Europos Dagger with Sheath, 3rd Century AD
Dura-Europos (also Doura-Europos or Dura-Europus)was a fortress city originally founded in303 BC on the banks of the Euphrates River (in what is now known as Syria) and captured by the Romans in 165 AD. Its geographical location at the crossroads of different empires allowed a wide mix of cultures and traditions. It remained in the hands of the Romans for nearly a century before being conquered by the Persian Sassanids in 256-257 AD.
After the conquest and deportation of the entire population, the city was abandoned and eventually disappeared completely under the layers of sand. Rediscovered by chance in the 1920s, it became an incredibly important archaeological site from which a multitude of finds, protected by desert sands for centuries, were unearthed over the years - from buildings to frescoes, to various artifacts and even human remains of Sassanida and Roman soldiers.
The late Roman dagger we offer here is based on fragments of decorative metal sheath plates found during excavations at Dura Europos (1928-1937) and budapest, Hungary. The observation side of the red wooden and leather sheath is adorned with a slotted/open brass panel known as thekenbeschlag - a specific German term adopted in English terminology. Although only about 200 examples have been recorded so far, the findings suggest that this type of sheath fitting and the curious scabed end (spoon-shaped) were established characteristics from the end of the second to the fourth c. Roman knife sheaths. The sheath is also equipped with two brass transport rings and a leather drawstring. Discoveries of another thekenbeschläge seemto indicate that such hems were suspended from the belt by a rope and used horizontally, with the unusual end acting as a counterweight to the dagger's handle.
As the Dura dagger itself no longer survives, this reconstruction is modeled from the blade and parts of the handle preserved or partially preserved from the 3º c. examples (found, among others, in Hungary, Denmark and Switzerland). Unlike the wide, double-edged blade of the ancient Roman imperial pugio, this blade is much narrower and has a curved single edge and a slightly inclined back. It is made of EN45 spring steel and is not sharp. The handle is made of wood, the collar and the brass cover. Interestingly, the cover shows some similarities to the pommels used in some later seaxes of the migration period and was Viking.
Notice that this Roman dagger is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to the quality of collector, it is also perfectly suited as prop, for example, to complete your costume. This finely crafted piece of Roman history will make the portrait of a proud legionnaire of the end of the Roman Empire seem even more authentic.
