Robert the Bruce helmet, medieval bascineto with aventail, 1.6 mm steel
The bascinet appeared in the early fourteenth century. It evolved from the so-called cervelliere or secret helmet (a simple cranial cap) and remained a popular helmet until the 15th century throughout Central Europe.
The medieval bascinet we offer here is based on the helmet seen on the famous bronze statue of Robert I of Scotland (1274-1329) in Bannockburn. In 1314, after years of campaigning against the English crown, King Robert (commonly known as Robert the Bruce) defeated Edward II's army ofEngland at the Battle ofBannockburn, a decisive battle that eventually led to the restoration of Scottish independence. Like the legendary William Wallace, Robert the Bruce remains one of Scotland's most celebrated historical figures to date.
This early 14th century bascinet is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel and adorned with a riveted brass crown with beautiful details. It has a mesh dimension at shoulder height, aventail or camail, which protects the neck and throat. The 4-in-1 mesh is composed of steel rings with 1.6 mm thickness and internal diameter of approx. Nine millimeters. The detachable aventail is strongly tailored to an approx piercing. 4 cm wide leather band that is adjusted around the bottom edge of the bowl and tied to a series of brass vervelles (small protruding anchor points or rivets with holes) with a thin leather drawstring. The mesh dimension can then be removed or put back at will.
The blackened interior is fitted with a thin suspension lining made of leather. The 3 mm thick brown leather chin strap is adjustable and closes with an antique brass buckle.
Suitable for lightweight combat reenactans, LARP, stage or TV/movie, this thin and fully usable helmet will make your transformation into a proud knight or noble king perfect. Of course, it will also be a great addition to any helmet collector's treasure chamber and a decorative display piece for all enthusiasts of Scottish history.
