This beautiful sword from the late Viking Era is a reconstruction of a unique find that was unearthed from grave No. 8 during the archaeological excavation of a Viking cemetery in Langeid (Setesdal Valley, Bygland, Norway) in 2011. The remarkably well-preserved find made of iron, gold and silver can now be admired at the Kulturhistorisches Museum (Kulturhistorik Museum) in Oslo.

Due to the combination of spirals, runes, Latin letters and crosses that richly decorate the hand guard and handle, the original, dated about 1030, is truly unique. Although its exact meaning is still intriguing, some of these motives clearly carry a Christian message and suggest that this Nordic weapon was deliberately endorsed with Christian symbolism. The dating of the sword (early 11th century, which marked the end of Nordic paganism and the beginning of the Christian Middle Ages in Scandinavia) confirms this assumption.

In addition, the axe was found along with a wide axe, which had similarities to other axes discovered on the Thames in London in the same period. Therefore, some experts assume that the sword was brought from England to Norway and could have been the prestige or show of a wealthy warrior (possibly one of the fighters of King Canuto the Great).

Our reproduction of this extraordinary viking one-hand sword has a double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel with a wide and long fuller. The cutting edges are not sharp and the solid blade spike is screwed and riveted into the handle. In the case of the guard and the pommel made of molten (and partially tinned) brass, the highly detailed motifs and patterns that adorned the handle of the original artifact were reproduced as faithfully as possible. The tightening area with a wooden core is firmly wrapped with brass wire.

The Langeid sword is delivered with a wooden/brown leather hem with a very distinct wooden belt pass (maximum belt width of 5 cm) and brass accessories.

Note that this sword is not a weapon ready for battle. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its collection quality, it is also perfectly suited as prop, e. to complete your costume.
