Medieval velvet Kirtle / Cotehardie Isabell, long sleeves, black
This medieval velvet or kirtle dress has a well-adjusted bodice and an in-line skirt. The skirt piece is equipped with so-called gores (triangular/wedge-shaped pieces of fabric) that provide a generous touch and oscillate very well as you walk.
The piece closes on the center front with several old and fake brass buttons. The wide-cut sleeves are gathered below the elbow at wide cuffs that also close with buttons. The neckline and cuffs are full of satin. The heavy cotton velvet fabric gives this dress a noble appearance, accentuated even more by all the subtle details.
The cut of this dress is based on medieval illustrations from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The cotehardie, which evolved from the french baggy cotte and roughly translates into daring cotte, presumably owes its name to its bold and fair nature.
A typical kirtle or cotehardie usually featured loops or a button-up clasp on the central front. The introduction of buttons as functional fasteners (instead of pure ornamental items) is what made tailor-made and adaptable fashion possible. Given the new watertightness of the clothes, the closure usually consisted of a large number of buttons too spaced to prevent them from opening. Another distinctive feature of these dresses was the wide neckline, which looked increasingly lower over time and was particularly popular among women in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The cotehardie was usually combined with a shirt or blanket, a veil and a narrow belt.
Historical illustrations of late medieval kirtles can be found, among others, in The Romance of the Rose, an ancient French narrative poem from the 13th century. The dress found on a swamp body at Moy Bog in Ireland, and dated the 14th/15th century, was also a cotehardie with numerous buttons.
Velvet appeared in the 14th-century Mediterranean and was predominantly woven in Italy. Velvet clothes were luxury items, not only because of the complexity of the craftsmanship involved in the production, but also because the fabric was originally made of silk. Velvet was a very popular burgundy fashion fabric during the Renaissance period.

Cotton velvet should not be washed in the machine to avoid irreversible creases. Ironing should also be avoided at all costs, as this will crush the pile. To remove light stains, we recommend using a brush to gently brush the stained area toward the nap. For larger stains, it is advisable that the professional be dry washed.

Due to the specificity of the items sold by Loja Rei das Espadas, returns are only accepted under the following circumstances:
- The product sent is damaged by proven manufacturing defect.
- The characteristics of the product sent do not correspond to those described in the Online-Store
All items are shipped in perfect condition. If you receive any damaged item and that is justified, you can return it. We will send an identical article in good condition. You can request a return by email. The customer has 14 days to return the item.
Returns of products subject to special, personalized or made-to-measure orders are not accepted.
