Roman sword with sheath
Mainz-Fulham Roman Legionnaire Gladius type with sheath, 1st century .C., decorating sword
The gladius, the main weapon of the Roman legionaries from 3rd c. BC to the 3rd c. AD, has been used in many variations over the centuries. Primarily designed as a storage/stab gun, it was also quite effective at cutting or cutting. Eventually, this highly feared short sword was gradually replaced by the longest spatha during the mid/late Roman Empire.
Although the Roman short sword we offer here is not an individual replica of a royal archaeological piece, it is modeled after the gladii used by the Roman legions during the first half of the 1st c. OF ADS. The wide double-edged blade with a diamond-flat cross-section is forged in EN45 spring steel (untempered, unhardened). With its parallel, straight edges and long, pointed tip, it corresponds to a classic Fulham or Mainz-Fulham type gladius, which is believed to be a type of transition between the mainz types and the later ones of Pompeii (or a mere variation within the Mainz group) The edges are not sharp and the complete spike of the blade is screwed into the pomese (brass top nut). The handle is made of bone, guard and wooden pommel. The guard has a built-in brass plate.
The brown wooden and leather hem of this one-hand Roman gladius features elaborate brass fittings (a perforated medallion, bands with hanging rings and a structure or side rails that extend from top to bottom and end with a button). The throat plate on the observation side is adorned with a geometric sun-shaped open sky motif, and the V-shaped chape area with a symmetrical pattern of stylized curls covered with a palmette. The sheath mounts are inspired by period discoveries, especially the remains of a 1st c sword sheath. Shipwreck of Porto Novo, near Porto Vecchio (Corsica), which was also identified as a type of transition due to its shape, size and ornaments.
Note that this sword is not a weapon ready for battle. It is designed as a collector's piece or decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collectible, it is also perfectly suited as support, for example to complete your fantasy.
