Gladius sword with sheath
The gladius, the main weapon of the Roman legions, was used in many variations from the 4th century BC until the 3rd century AD. Pompeii gladius is one of the latest versions of the Roman short sword. It was named by modern historians after the Italian archaeological site, where the four canonical examples (dated before 79 AD, the year of the devastating volcanic eruption of Vesuvius, which buried the city under several meters of ash) were found.
The shorter, wider double-edged blade from the gladius pulpit facilitated close-range combat. With straight and parallel cutting edges and a triangular tip, these gladii were primarily designed as thrust/stabbing weapons, but still can be quite effective at cutting or cutting.
Made as historically accurate as possible, the sword offered here is a reconstruction of an ornate Pompeii's gládium, if of classical style. It features a non-sharp blade and fully forged high carbon steel hand. The grip is crafted from bone and faceted for a secure grip. It is styled by an oval protector and a spherical pommel, both made of solid wood with hand-carved designs. The sword spike is attached to the pommel with a top nut made of brass. A brass protective plate embedded in the guard wood is covered with a small piece of felt to cushion contact between the cable and the sheath. This tab is, however, easy to remove if you prefer to reveal the brass insert.
The beautiful and ornate hem is a real highlight. Made of wood bound in wine-colored leather, it is adorned with brass supports modeled after archaeological finds. While the design of the chape (V-shaped, with narrow horizontal stripe and half round button finish) is - albeit beautiful - quite unostentatious, the medallion is, in contrast, elaborately decorated with tin-clad details. Each of the two iconographic plates mounted on the observation side of the throat shows cut/perforated motifs and engraved of a helmet figure in full attire. The upper panel represents a warrior on foot, standing between two patterns, while the lower panel depicts a similar warrior in a two-horse carriage or chariot. Two pairs of cast bronze rings on each side of the sheath medallion allow the wearer to carry his gládio in true Roman shape.
As this pompeii-style gladius has blunt edges, but a sharp point, it is not recommended for the re-enactment of contact (combat), but rather for the living story. Paired with authentic outfits and armor, this beautifully designed sword is the perfect piece for any high-ranking legionnaire. But in addition to re-enactment purposes, it is also a fantastic collectible item and display for any enthusiast of Roman history.
