This high-waisted medieval dress with contrasting details is made of cotton fabric. The side seams are open from hip to arm and feature a lace for individual adjustment. The Church did not approve all these side openings that partially revealed the undergarment, which explains why they are also called the gates of hell. The mooring ropes are equipped with metal tips to facilitate passage through the sewn eyelets. The so-called gores inserted into the side seams and the front and rear panels of the skirt piece give the dress a generous touch. The extended trumpet sleeves and decorative stitches at the sleeve hems and open side seams give the dress a noble finishing touch.
The cut of the dress is typical of the so-called bliaut (or bliaud) and follows the fashion of the 11th to 13th centuries. While women's clothes had been cut and hidden until then, this era saw the emergence of increasingly tight clothes. The Bliaut was initially a courteous outer dress, as the enlarged sleeves were not suitable for the working classes. Over time, this type of dress ended up gaining popularity also among the middle classes, but was most commonly worn with straight-cut sleeves. It was not only worn by women, but also by men - as a piece of knee-high clothing.
The Bliaut was characterized by the side openings at waist level and the trumpet sleeves. While the gates of hell seemed like a wider cut, digs a little too big, they gradually increased over time until they extended to the hips. The sleeves of the trumpet can also take extreme shapes, sometimes reaching the ground. The Bliaut was usually combined with a shirt or blanket, a veil and a narrow belt.
Historical illustrations of bliauts can be found, among others, in the fresco, showing Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan, or at the Hortus Deliciarum in the late 12th century.
