The most famous Muslim privateer was born on the Greek island of Lesbos, then under Turkish control. He built his reputation as a corsicaner in the early years of the 16th century; along with his brother Aruch, from his base in Algiers, he went on to control trade in the Mediterranean under the auspices of the Turkish Empire and become a nightmare for the Spanish empire and the other Christian states of his time.
After Aruch's death, Barbarroja was appointed admiral of the Otoman fleet by Suleiman I, and joined forces with the King of France, Francis I, to unleash a powerful offensive against The King of Spain Charles V; Only crépy's peace, agreed between France and Spain in 1544, put an end to his attacks.
