The first use of "katana" as a word to describe a long sword other than a tachi occurs already in the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
The katana used to be combined with a similar smaller companion sword, such as a wakizashi, or could also be used with both, a smaller dagger and similar shape. Pairing a katana with a smaller sword is called daisho. Only the samurai could use the daisho: he represented the social power and personal honor of the samurai.
The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single-edged blade with circular protection and long grip to accommodate two hands. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan.
